Chios has a lacelike shoreline, with great variety of beaches, mainly of small bays. Many of them are the coasts of fishing villages or nearby settlements, while others are secluded and romantically isolated. The great majority of Chios’ beaches are coupled with scenic green landscapes. We find more busy and organized ones close or near to the town of Chios, at the eastern coast. The western cost is more rugged, with colder waters. At the South and North coast we meet many peaceful and romantic beaches.

Eastern coast

Near the town of Chios the beaches that stand out are:

Paralia Glaroi (Beach of Seagulls); a popular for her scenic beauty sandy beach, 7km north of Chios.
Karfas beach; the most developed and well organized resort of the island, 5km south of Chios.
Ayia Fotia beach; 11km south of Chios, which is very popular among the youth.

South coast

At the South of the island we meet the most famous beach of Chios: Mavra Volia (Black Pebbles); a scenic volcanic beach, SE of the traditional village of Pyrgi. Other nice beaches of the South are:

Vroulidia beach; a secluded scenic beach, 9km south of Pyrgi.
Ayia Dinami beach; one more scenic and secluded beach, near the medieval village of Olympoi.
Avlonia beach; south of the medieval village of Mesta.

Western coast

The lacelike western coast of the island has a lot of romantic beaches with clear, though a bit cold, waters. The only busy beaches are these near the traditional village of Volissos; nenertheless they are so many and various that they can satisfy almost anyone. From the rest we note particularly:

Lithi beach; a quiet fishing village, with sandy beach, ideal for families, 25km west of Chios.
Trachili beach; a peaceful, romantic refuge, north of Lithi.
Elinda beach; a remote, scenic bay, 5km north of Lithi.

North coast

The north coast of the island is somehow the remotest area, since it is quite far from the busy settlements and resorts of Chios. Here the area of Ayiasmata stands out for her unspoiled natural beauty. The sea here is quite rough, with big waves. The beaches of Yiossonas, Nagos, Yialisskari and Marmaro host the visitors from the nearby village of Kardamyla.
